Feb. 29th is known as “leap day,” a custom that dates back to the year 46 B.C.E. Julius Caesar took the advice of the astronomer Sosigenes of Alexandria, who knew from Egyptian calander that the year was about 365.25 days in length. So to account for that residual quarter of a day, an extra day, or a leap day was added to the calendar every four years. Check out the article for more information.
